Imperial Checkerboard Flower 'Rubra Maxima' (Fritllaria) is an amazing plant that grows up to 60 cm with beautiful bell-shaped flowers and hair-forming leaves, giving the plant the appearance of a small palm tree. It will look great on flowerbeds and rock gardens. What's more, its scent deters moles and voles.
It grows best in fully or partially sunny places, sheltered from the wind, on permeable and humus-rich soil, with a reaction close to neutral. They are planted at a fairly large distance from each other - about 40 cm - otherwise they stop blooming quickly when they are too densely placed.
When the first frosts are approaching, The bulbs in the soil should be covered with straw or leaves to protect them from freezing. In the spring, remove the cover and start fertilizing. For the plants to develop well, we spread the multi-component fertilizer and gently mix it with the soil. In the case of long-lasting moisture, its bulbs may rot, so it is best to choose a slightly elevated place in the beds, so that the rainwater can drain freely.
To store the bulbs, it is worth choosing a ventilated place, where it is not too hot. However, it is good to leave the chessboards in the same place for several years.
